Do You Need Bleach for Highlights? Our JB Guide

Not always. At Cutdomos Hair Studio, highlights do not automatically require bleach. Whether bleach is needed depends on your current base colour, how much brightness and contrast you want, and the present condition and chemical history of your hair.

If you are considering highlights in Johor Bahru, the safest answer is consultation first. We plan around the hair you have now, not only the reference photo you bring.

When do highlights need bleach?

Definition: Bleach is a lightening process used when we need to lift the hair to create noticeably lighter sections. In practical terms, bleach is more likely to be discussed when your base is darker and you want clearer contrast, stronger dimension, or brighter face-framing pieces.

If your goal is only soft dimension or a result closer to your current base, a different colour direction may sometimes make more sense. We do not treat bleach as the default answer before checking your hair history and condition.

What do we check before deciding?

Our highlight planning follows a consultation-led process:

  • Current hair condition
  • Previous colour and bleach history
  • Other chemical services such as perming, rebonding or straightening
  • Starting base colour
  • Desired brightness and contrast
  • Placement, haircut shape, density and length
  • Maintenance preference and lifestyle

For example, thicker or longer hair may need different placement for highlights to be visible, while finer or shorter hair can show contrast more quickly. If you want a more natural result, you may also find our guide on how many highlights affect a natural-looking finish helpful.

What if your hair has already been coloured or bleached?

Previously coloured or bleached hair needs closer assessment, not assumptions. We look at dryness, roughness, tangling, elasticity, frizz, and whether some sections are more chemically stressed than others.

If your hair has also been permed or rebonded, that history matters too. We explain this more in our guide to colouring bleached or rebonded hair and how dryness can affect colour, bleach or perm suitability.

Important: There is no fixed foil count, no universal waiting period, and no rule that every highlight service needs bleach. Suitability depends on the actual hair in front of us.

Can highlights be done without bleaching again?

Yes, sometimes the better next step is not more bleaching. One confirmed customer case involved previously lightened hair that looked warmer and yellower as the colour faded. Because the hair had already been chemically processed, we chose a colour-based direction to reduce unwanted warmth instead of automatically bleaching again.

In another confirmed case involving grey and uneven two-tone colour, we planned a deeper cool brown base with dimensional lighter sections to soften the contrast between regrowth and the overall colour. That is similar to the thinking we explain in our grey blending vs grey coverage guide.

Our honest answer

If you want highlights, you may need bleach, but not always. The right decision depends on your hair colour, your target contrast, and whether your hair condition supports further lightening safely and realistically.
