Where Should Highlights Be Placed? A Practical Guide

Highlights should be placed based on your current hair condition, haircut shape, base colour, desired contrast and maintenance preference. In our consultation at Cutdomos Hair Studio, we usually explain highlight placement in three practical directions: face-framing, surface and full placement. The best option depends on the hair you have now, not just the reference photo you bring.

For some clients, a few lighter pieces around the face create enough brightness. For others, surface dimension or fuller distribution makes more sense. We do not use a fixed foil count or assume that more highlights automatically look better. If you want more context on quantity, you can also read our guide on how many highlights create a natural-looking result.

What do face-framing, surface and full highlights mean?

Face-framing highlights

Definition: Face-framing highlights are lighter sections placed mainly around the front hairline and the pieces that sit closest to your face.

This option is often chosen when you want visible brightness without changing the whole head. It can suit clients who want a softer commitment, a more noticeable front view, or a colour plan that feels lighter without distributing highlights everywhere.

Surface highlights

Definition: Surface highlights are lighter sections placed on the outer visible layers of the hair.

This placement is useful when you want dimension that shows when the hair falls naturally. It can create movement and brightness on layered hair, but the result still depends on density, haircut shape and how your hair sits day to day.

Full highlights

Definition: Full highlights are a more distributed placement throughout the hair for an overall lighter and more dimensional result.

This direction is usually considered when you want brightness from more angles, stronger contrast, or a more noticeable overall colour change. On thicker or longer hair, fuller placement may be needed if a small number of sections would disappear visually once the hair falls naturally.

How do we decide where your highlights should go?

At Cutdomos Hair Studio, our decision process is consultation-led. We assess your current hair first, then build the placement plan around what is realistic and suitable.

  • Your existing base colour
  • Previous permanent colour, bleach, perm, rebonding or straightening history
  • Current dryness, frizz, tangling and overall condition
  • Hair density, length and haircut shape
  • How bright, soft or contrasty you want the result to look
  • How much maintenance you are comfortable with
The same placement can look very different on different people. Against a darker base, highlights usually stand out more strongly. On lighter hair, the same amount of highlighting may blend more softly.

Which placement suits which goal?

  • Choose face-framing highlights if you want brightness around the face without a full colour change.
  • Choose surface highlights if you want visible dimension on the outer layers and natural movement.
  • Choose full highlights if you want a more overall lighter, more dimensional effect.

Sometimes, highlights are not the only answer. Depending on your base and condition, we may also discuss lowlights, a softer colour direction, selected brightness only, or a plan that avoids further bleaching for now. Our article on what to mention during a hair colour consultation explains why these details matter.

What real salon experience tells us

We have been open since 2017, and Marcus Bin and Don each have more than 20 years of industry experience. In August 2026, our Pelangi outlet showed 4.8 stars from more than 360 Google reviews, while our Taman Sentosa outlet showed 4.9 stars from more than 630 Google reviews.

That experience matters because highlight planning is rarely just about copying a photo. We have seen cases where clients wanted more brightness, but their previous bleach history or chemical processing meant a more cautious colour direction was the better next step. In another confirmed colour case, instead of bleaching again, we refreshed the hair with a brown-toned direction to reduce visible warmth after fading.

If your hair is already dry, bleached or chemically processed, we recommend reading what we check before colouring bleached or rebonded hair and signs your hair may be too dry for another chemical service.

Our goal is not to push the most dramatic highlight plan. Our goal is to recommend the placement that suits your current hair, your desired look and your maintenance reality.
